Craniosacral Therapy in NYC

A gentle, hands-on therapy that helps your body release tension, calm the nervous system, and move more comfortably — in our Union Square clinic.

    What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on technique that focuses on the head, spine, and sacrum (the base of the spine), along with the membranes and fluid that surround the brain and spinal cord.

Using very light touch, your therapist feels for areas of restriction and tension and helps them ease. The aim is to relax tight tissue, calm an overactive nervous system, and support your body's natural ability to heal.

At James Fowler Physical Therapy, craniosacral therapy is offered by our massage therapists, who work closely with our physical therapy team. That means your session can stand on its own or be part of a wider treatment plan.

    Who Craniosacral Therapy Helps

Because it is so gentle, craniosacral therapy suits people of almost any age and activity level. Patients often come to us for:

    • Tension headaches and migraines
    • Jaw pain, clenching, and TMJ / TMD
    • Neck and upper back pain
    • Stress, anxiety, and trouble sleeping
    • Recovery after injury, including whiplash and concussion (with medical clearance)
    • Chronic pain and fibromyalgia
    • Anyone who prefers a gentle, low-pressure treatment

    What a Session Is Like

Your first visit begins with a short conversation about your symptoms, health history, and goals. You then lie comfortably on a treatment table, fully clothed, in a private room.

Your therapist places their hands lightly on areas such as your head, neck, back, and sacrum. The touch is soft and still, with small, subtle holds rather than the strokes of a traditional massage. Many people feel warmth, gentle pulsing, or a deep sense of relaxation.

Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes. Afterward, most people feel calm and loose. Drink some water and take it easy for the rest of the day if you can.

    Craniosacral Therapy FAQs

    Does craniosacral therapy hurt?

No. Craniosacral therapy uses very light touch, usually no more pressure than the weight of a nickel. Most people find it deeply relaxing, and many fall asleep on the table.

How many craniosacral therapy sessions will I need?

It depends on what you are coming in for. Some people notice a change after one session, while ongoing issues such as headaches or jaw tension usually respond best to a short series of sessions. Your therapist will suggest a plan after your first visit.

Do I need to undress for craniosacral therapy?

No. You stay fully clothed for the whole session. We recommend comfortable clothing.

Can craniosacral therapy be combined with physical therapy?

Yes. Because our massage therapists work alongside our physical therapy team in Union Square, craniosacral therapy can be added to a physical therapy plan, for example to support TMJ, neck pain, or headache treatment.

Do I need a referral for craniosacral therapy?

No referral is needed. You can book a craniosacral therapy session directly by calling (212) 253-9383 or through our contact page.
