We Assess & Treat Musculoskeletal Injuries

The goal of orthopedic rehabilitation is to improve your movement quality and range of motion. We assess your injury, determine your weaknesses, and create a plan to get you moving again.

    Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Located in Manhattan's Union Square, NYC

    How We Help:

Orthopedic Rehabilitation concentrates on issues of the musculoskeletal framework - muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons. We analyze, oversee and treat injuries of the musculoskeletal framework and restore patients directly after orthopedic operations. At James Fowler Physical Therapy, our therapists spend a significant amount of time treating post-operative joints, acute injuries due to sporting activities or everyday injuries, arthritis and more.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation is key to reestablish the patient's movement quality and range of motion post-surgery. Patients normally have weakness and deficiencies which can be reduced or repaired through re-education, manual massage and customized workouts. Our therapists are trained in surgical systems and will educate the patient and show them suitable workouts intended to reestablish motion and minimize pain/issues.

    Who We Help:

While most patients see us due to injury as a result of an auto accident, sporting injury, or other type of unexpected injury, we also regularly work with those suffering from chronic pain (arthritis, etc.) and restricted movement.

    We work to:

    • Improve your mobility, working on increasing your pain-free range of motion.
    • Reduce inflammation, muscle tension, and over stiffness.
    • Improve your gait and make it easier for you to walk, jog, and run.
    • Stabilize joints
    • Increase overall flexibility and strength
    • Improve your posture (we often incorporate movement rehabilitation into our processes)

Ultimately, our goal is to get you moving - walking, running, dancing, and playing - so that you can return to your normal life.

    We Employ Numerous Methodologies

When it comes to rehabilitation, there is no "one size fits all" or a "magic pill" that is suitable for everyone. For this reason, our physical therapists customize your treatment based on your needs, level of pain, lifestyle, age, and other factors that have a tangible influence on your treatment.

    Active Release Technique

Active release is a contemporary massage technique that effectively addresses symptoms emanating from muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. This is not a relaxation massage, but rather an intense and focused practice that addresses and relieves pain.

    Dance Rehabilitation

JFPT's specially trained team of physical therapists work with artists such as dancers, gymnasts, figure skaters and musicians to provide an in-depth evaluation that assesses posture, strength, movement patterns and performance techniques.

    Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilization is a manual therapy intervention, a type of passive movement of a skeletal joint. It is usually aimed at a 'target' synovial joint with the aim of achieving a therapeutic effect.

Joint Mobilization With Movement (Mulligan's Technique)

The Mulligan concept can be used to help treat a variety of injuries and pain including neck pain, back pain and upper and lower extremity injuries. Designed to reduce pain and improve the patient's range of motion the Mulligan technique involves Natural Apophyseal Glides (NAGS), Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glides (SNAGS) and Mobilization with Movement (MWM) for the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.

    Lumbar Stabilization & Core Strengthening

Lumbar stabilization is the development of a neutral spine position and we work with patients to reinforce and educate them for better alignment while standing, sitting, and participation in recreational activities.

    Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle energy technique is a manual therapy procedure which involves the voluntary contraction of a muscle in a precisely controlled direction at varying levels of intensity against a distinct counter-force applied by the therapist.

    Myofascial Release - Direct & Non-Direct Approach

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

    Neuromuscular Facilitation

An advanced form of flexibility training that involves both the stretching and contraction of the targeted muscle group.

    Postural Re-Education

Maintaining good posture is extremely important to general wellness and injury prevention. We break down your current posture and movement and educate patients on how to sit, stand and move with proper posture.

    Running Analysis

Running analysis is a thorough study of a patient's gait, foot strike, stride length, running/walking body alignment, core engagement and shoe selection.

    Soft Tissue Mobilization

Soft tissue mobilization is breaking up inelastic or fibrous muscle tissue such as scar tissue from a back injury, move tissue fluids, and relax muscle tension using the physical therapist's manual therapy.

    Sports Physical Therapy

Sports physical therapy is a customized program to help our athletes achieve their physical goals. Each sports therapy patient has a customized treatment and training plan designed to increase their strength, speed and movement resulting in a more dynamic athlete.

    Strain / Counter-Strain Technique

Strain and Counterstrain is a gentle soft tissue manipulation technique. Strain and Counterstrain is effective in treating pain, limitations in strength and range of motion, allows a therapist to release muscle and connective tissue spasm from all areas and systems of the human body.
