Addressing & Treating Hand & Wrist Pain
Hand and wrist pain is often a result of repetitive stresses, such as texting or typing non-stop, though obvious factors (such as a broken hand or arthritis) are of course at work as well. Due to the importance of your hands and wrists in today’s modern society, we take extra care in understanding the root cause of your pain in addition to the symptoms they present.
Our talented therapists treat hand and wrist arthritis with manual therapy to relieve pain and increase range of motion. Alongside, manual therapy we will design an exercise program to increase the patient’s strength and mobility. Modalities will be incorporated to help alleviate swelling to the affected area.
At James Fowler PT we focus on reducing the swelling from bursitis through different approaches. A mixture of modalities including ultrasound, E-Stim, or Photo Therapy depending on the case. In conjunction with managing the swelling, we build a custom exercise plan to build strength and flexibility. Part of the treatment plan is modifying the patients daily activities to relieve stress on the area.
Dislocation & Instability
At JFPT we take a focused approach to stabilizing the area affected by a dislocation. Whether it was as a result of hypermobility or traumatic injury, it is important to ensure the surrounding musculature is safe and stable during the recovery process. A mixture of strengthening and muscular and postural reeducation is used to ensure the safety of joints. Soft tissue massage and modalities are used to help with symptoms. If necessary we will fit the patient with a brace.
Fractures (Traumatic & Stress)
Wrist fractures have different levels of severity and have different time frames for physical therapy treatment. In general wrist fractures can begin treatment after 6 weeks post operation and begin work to restore the patient’s range of motion and strength through a series of exercises supervised by our team of physical therapists and trainers.
Ligament tears in your hand or wrist can be very debilitating and frustrating injuries. Rest is important after a ligament tear in your wrist or hand. The use of a hot or cold treatments initially is used to help control symptoms. After the wrist heals enough, we will add a comprehensive strengthening program to return to full function, strength and mobility.
Muscle Tear & Strain
When working to heal muscle tears or strains in the wrist or hand, it is extremely important to avoid any activities that can further stress the injured muscle. In addition to soft tissue massage and Active Release Technique (ART) to surrounding musculature, modalities are used to help improve symptoms. We focus on maintaining surrounding muscle groups strong and flexible to allow for the injury to heal, and progress the patient through an exercises program to rehab the injury and prevent further episodes.
Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Treating myofascial pain syndrome in the wrist starts with resting and avoiding activation of the affected muscles, followed ice and heat therapy. Working with different techniques of soft tissue manipulation, our team of therapists will work to improve fassia tension. Once the pain has subsided we will work to create an exercise program of the wrist/hand to return the limp to full function.
Nerve entrapment in the hand or wrist is often caused by repetitive strain to musculature causing swelling and tension in the tissue. When treating nerve entrapment it’s important to do a full of the patient’s activities, lifestyle, and work. Given the particular injury we will provide a customized treatment plan to return the patient to a pain free state and avoid future episodes.
In the early stages of treatment it is important to follow the surgical team’s protocol and control symptoms. Following close communication with the patient’s surgeon and once it is safe to begin strengthening, we will begin to regain the range of motion in the fingers and hand to avoid stiffness. This will follow a progression of a mixture of exercises to increase strength.
Repetitive Strain Injury
As it is with most strain related injuries, muscular exertion and poor mechanics are at fault, thus it is important to first understand the origin of the problem. A comprehensive assessment of the injury will help our team create a plan of care targeting, muscular imbalances, poor posture and biomechanics. Incorporating different techniques of manual therapy, movement re-education and other modalities to aide with symptoms, our team of therapists and trainers are equipped to help the body be back and running at full speed.
Sports Technique Rehabilitation
It is important to have goals when addressing wrist and hand pain under the sports technique. While it is important to rest, athletes can’t always afford to take time off. However, it is important to maintain a steady course of action. Our team of therapists and trainers will work with you to create an adequate neuromuscular training program to help enhance technique.
Pain management is the first step in treating wrist tendinitis. At JFPT, we work with the patient to design a treatment protocol to manage symptoms. While painmagement is important, our team of therapists focus on manual therapy on the injured wrist or hand, the team of trainers will follow close protocols to focus on strengthening and range of motion exercises.
